CREW Utah Awards Local 2019 Scholarships

CREW Utah is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2019 CREW Utah Elevate Scholarship: Natasha Alarid, Cierra Parkinson, and Janae Thomas. In addition to the scholarships, each recipient will receive a CREW Utah student membership.

“We were impressed with the diversity of applications from a wide array of schools and program concentrations,” said Roberta Reichgelt, CREW Utah Scholarship Chairperson and Economic Development Manager with Salt Lake City Corporation. “We are very excited with this year's recipients and look forward to their future involvement with CREW and watching their careers take off in commercial real estate. Janea smallNatasha Alarid is in her second year at the University of Utah pursuing a Masters of Real Estate Development. She transitioned to commercial real estate development after building franchises in Utah and throughout the USA. She previously worked with her husband to establish a water company in Kenya and continued onto India where she become familiar with REITs. Natasha and her team’s proposal recently won the 2019 Utah Real Estate Challenge at the University of Utah. She currently works at JF Capital, coordinating the financing of their LIHTC developments. She hopes to continue to work on innovative projects and help to alleviate Utah’s housing crisis.


Janea smallCierra Parkinson is an undergraduate student studying Finance at the University of Utah. She plans to enroll in the MRED program at the University of Utah following graduation. Outside of her studies, Cierra works as Director of Programs and Communications for The AIA Utah Chapter. She has recently served as an intern with the survey research team at the Kem C. Gardener Policy Institute and sits on the Board of Women in Business. Her experience working in the architectural and public policy fields has helped to establish an interest in developing better urban environments for generations to come.


Janea smallJanae Thomas enrolled full time in the Construction Management program at Weber State University as a single mom with two young daughters while at the same time managing properties, owning rentals, and project managing residential renovations. Janae currently oversees internship coordination under the Talent Ready Utah Grant for Utah’s Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Pathway. She organized the 2019 WSU Design Build Day, attended by over 500 students and over 40 AEC companies and organizations. Janae is excited to partner with CREW Utah as a platform to encourage more women to join the commercial construction industry.

“I wouldn’t have a college degree if it weren’t for scholarships, so I am thrilled that CREW Utah has developed a legacy scholarship program,” said Wendy Leonelli, CREW Utah President and Commercial Real Estate Loan Officer at Zions Bank, Real Estate Banking Group. “Our mission is to advance the achievements of women in commercial real estate, and a great way to do that is through higher education.”
